In 2003, a San X employee named Aki Kondo was challenged to a new character and combined the words “rilakkusu” (relax) and “kuma” to create Rilakkuma, the bear in a relaxed mood. It has an assortment of bear friends Korilakkuma and Chairoikoguma, along with a bird Kiiroitori. After its launch in 2003, Rilakkuma featured on an animation series titled Rilakkuma and Kaoru in 2019, as well as on stationery, merchandise and themed collaboration cafes.
