WOW Gifts

WOW Gifts

I remember so vividly the one year when I came downstairs on Christmas morning to find a bike under (well next to) the Christmas tree, wrapped in a huge red bow. I'm not sure whether I was still "a believer" at that age but either which way it was the most exciting moment of my life thus far - a mint green racer with white handles. It must have been an 80s thing as I really can't imagine kids on them now!

In amongst our huge range of gifts and stocking fillers for babies through to older children are nestled some really WOW gifts - items that are beautifully crafted and offer endless play opportunity, things to cherish and pass down to younger siblings and things that will simply stay in the family forever.

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

We've been busy hanging mobiles from the shop ceiling this week and they are drawing so many admiring comments! They really are SO mesmerising as they gently twirl in the air, it's easy to see why they have such a calming effect on babies.

Quite coincidentally all of our current mobiles hail from Scandinavia. Produced by three very different but equally stylish brands, we have something for every nursery.

Konges Sløjd have designed these beautiful cloud mobiles with felted clouds and silver or gold coloured droplets, available in 3 subtly different colour-ways and coordinating beautifully with some of the other nursery pieces we stock by the brand.

Konges Sløjd are also responsible for this stunning swan in flight mobile, a truly unique piece that soars gracefully overhead here in our Brighton shop - it makes for a welcome change from those noisy seagulls!

The Loullou-universe is a concept evoked from the imagination of Lærke Rune, a Copenhagen based product and furniture Designer who has created a small line of architectural toys. All of their products are made from sustainable and organic materials, with all wood used FSC-certified. Their mobiles come in two different styles, "Up in the Air' and 'Stardust', simple and stylish. If you haven't seen their gorgeous baby gym and accessories yet, you must take a look but be warned, its an absolute must-have!

We have so many beautiful pieces from the Liewood range, from muslins and swaddles to the most adorable wash mitts and hooded towels but the pom-pom cloud mobiles have been the biggest hit in store, available in multiple colour combinations and sizes, they come packaged in a cute box which makes them the most adorable new baby gift.

PlanToys - Sustainable Play

PlanToys - Sustainable Play

Environmentally responsible PlanToys is notable for making its toys from rubber wood, a sustainable by-product of the latex industry's harvesting of trees used for natural rubber production.

From first baby toys for tiny hands still mastering grip and coordination to puzzles, games and construction for more able, older children - the PlanToys collection is a pre-schooler's dream.

The stand-out item from the collection for us is the stunning rocking pegasus, this item could not be any more beautiful if it tried!

Other favourites for the tinies are these adorable animal racers in a duck, hen and bunny design.  With their numbered frontage they make perfect first, second and third birthday gifts or buy all three to race at the same time - 1,2,3 and they're off!

Beautiful bath time toys are surprisingly hard to find but PlanToys have excelled themselves with their arctic adventurers.  Of the walrus, penguin, polar bear and seal it has to be the new walrus that floats our boat!

For the budding builder in your life PlanToys have an awesome pounding bench which is suitable from just 12 months.  Once all the pegs are pounded children can simply turn the panel over to start the fun all over again!  And for those age 3+ this toolbox is pretty awesome - not only can you build amazing things but you can also have your own robot play buddy!  The set consists of 16 pieces and includes a hammer, wrench with screwdriver, nuts and bolts and the toolbox itself that can flip upside down and be transformed into a robot.

Of the games we have here which include a balancing cactus and feed a frog, it's the beehive game for the little one that's won our hearts - it helps to develop fine motor skills by matching the bee to its hive using the pincer grasp on the forceps and also reinforces colour recognition and counting, super cute!

Ingela's World - Retro Perfection

Ingela's World - Retro Perfection

We are so in love with Sweden-based illustrator Ingela P Arrhenius at the moment.  Her beautiful illustrations ooze 50's and 60's retro simplicity and she has a knack for creating the most adorable characters.

The "Where's Mr and Mrs" animal series takes your youngest ones on a colourful hide-and-seek adventure.  Whether you choose to journey through a garden with Mrs Ladybird, a forest with Mr Owl, a jungle with Mr Lion or a farmyard with Mrs Hen you will be sure to meet lots of cute characters along your way.

Once little hands are more developed Main Street Magic more than lives up to its name.  Visit the bakery, fish market, hair salon, museum, and circus, lifting flaps to make extraordinary discoveries as you wander through this small town.  Peer through the die-cut windows of the bakery to admire its mouthwatering croissants, then lift the gatefold to waltz inside where there are additional flaps and wonderful delicacies to discover.

Ingela's collaboration with the French toy makers Vilac is something special and from our range of beautifully designed and crafted wooden toys that include building/stacking toys and skipping ropes, the pull-along toys have to be amongst our favourites.  In a hotly contested competition between the hen, the astronaut and the elephant, the musical hen and chick is our in-house winner (we may or may not have been swayed by the fact it plays the can-can!).

There's always room to squeeze one more toy in the stocking and our final addition this year is going to be one of these fun kaleidoscopes though we keep flip-flopping about which one to choose!

Every year we dream of a white Christmas and every year we've been disappointed!  Here in the UK Glasgow is currently looking like a snow-lovers best bet with odds as high as 2-1, in Brighton we're taking no chances and if its another wet one we will at least be taking shelter with Vilac's stylish children's umbrellas. The space themed brolly with a gorgeous wooden astronaut handle is our little ones favourite though the cat and bear are equally adorable.
